Ninetta

This work comes from an iconographical and historical research about the prostitute figure. It develops as an urban performance set in a precise historical period, the end of the fifties, in Italy just set free from the brothels, thank to the Merlin law. The project take place in downtown of two italian cities, Bologna and Cremona, where I performed as prostitute offering kisses to buy. “Ninetta” is a feminine stereotype of the old days, who set in an inhabited city centre, assumes a decadent and disturbing alienation, like a surreal vision. At the same time it overturns the stereotype offering to the client the possibility to get what he mostly wants: a moment of familiarity and intimacy, the request of a kiss to buy. In fact an inquiry made following reports of prostitutes and clients of various age and social origin shows that the kiss is the most frequent demand ( that usually the prostitute doesn’t want to satisfy), while it is publicly stated or understood as a moment lived inside the home or anyway never with a prostitute. What is usually put elsewhere, far away from the city, in the suburbs, comes back being visible and incomprehensible and it penetrates with a ghost figure as to point out a repressed place, an unavowable desire, a contradiction.

“Ninetta” è un lavoro che nasce da un’attenta ricerca storiografica e iconografica sulla figura della prostituta. Si sviluppa come performance urbana ambientata in un preciso periodo storico, la fine degli anni ‘50, nell’Italia appena liberata dalle case chiuse con la legge Merlin. Il progetto ha luogo nel centro di due città italiane, Bologna e Cremona, dove nei panni di una prostituta offro baci da comprare. “Ninetta” è uno stereotipo femminile d’altri tempi, che posto in un centro urbano abitato, si carica di uno straniamento perturbante e decadente, come una visione surreale. Al contempo ribalta lo stereotipo quando offre al cliente la possibilità di esaudire ciò che egli desidera di più, un momento di confidenza e intimità, la richiesta di un bacio da acquistare. Infatti da un’indagine fatta in base a racconti di prostitute e di clienti di varie età ed estrazione sociale emerge che il bacio sia la richiesta più frequente (desiderio che la prostituta generalmente non intende esaudire), mentre pubblicamente si dichiara o sottintende come un momento vissuto tra le pareti domestiche o comunque mai con una prostituta. Ciò che si tende a relegare altrove, lontano dalle città, nelle periferie, torna visibile e incomprensibile e si infiltra con una figura fantasma come ad indicarci un spazio rimosso, un desiderio inconfessabile, una contraddizione.
