Paintings 2025 – 2026
oil on canvas, tempera on paper (different sizes)

The project comprises a series of oil paintings on canvas and tempera on paper and explores the theme of the undergrowth, a place where plant on the woodland floor, sheltered by tall trees, emerge like islands of light sculpted by the sun. The works are presented in a realistic style, with varying degrees of close-up and framing of shrubs, leaves, blades of grass, and the ground, emphasizing chiaroscuro. The images draw on memories of some of my summer walks in the Apennine woods, when the light passes through the treetops and projects itself decisively to the ground, as if to reveal something secretly happening. The underlying idea is the indomitable force of nature that ceaselessly renews itself, that “green energy” that in the philosophical and spiritual thought of Hildegard of Bingen is called “Viriditas,” the pure energy infused in nature and in every living being that enables growth, fertilizes, heals, and regenerates. The undergrowth is a hidden, shaded place, gathering and protecting seed, giving rise to the process of transformation. It is the place of decomposition and the humus for a new life cycle. The project is also a reflection on how nature, despite natural disasters, wars, disfigurements, and environmental disasters, continues its course, remaining, through a process of self-healing, the heartland of vitality.
