Shān

Shān is a project created during a research stay in a small village under the Mutianyu Great Wall. The focus of this work is the mountain, protagonist of the striking landscape of that place. Painted in watercolor on long vertical rice paper sheets and on thin Chinese papers, the mountain is an icon image that repeated like a mantra, and charged with symbolic force become the emblem of an archetype and the witness of historical change of the place. A symbol that crosses east and west, and which in Chinese culture is one of the eight trigrams from which I Ching derives, which is attributed the value of immobility, such as fixity, sitting and meditation. In all cultures the mountain refers to calm, spiritual ascent and growth, home of the gods, border area, invigorating goal. Shān (mountain in Chinese) is also composed of two photographs on cotton paper, mounted on silk fabric and bamboo sticks, with a vertical shape, reminiscent of the landscaped genre works of ancient Chinese painters. A video completes the project, in which the relationship between the landscape and the architecture becomes more evident. Here a strange form appears as a vision along the path of the Wall: energy and power of Nature manifesting, spirit / divinity of the place.

Shān è un progetto realizzato durante un soggiorno di ricerca in un piccolo villaggio sotto la Grande Muraglia, nei pressi di Mutianyu. Oggetto del lavoro è la montagna, protagonista del suggestivo paesaggio del luogo. Dipinta ad acquerello su lunghi fogli verticali di carta di riso e su sottili carte cinesi, la montagna è un’immagine icona che ripetuta come un mantra si carica di forza simbolica divenendo emblema di un archetipo e testimone di un luogo e delle sue trasformazioni. Un simbolo che attraversa oriente e occidente, e che nella cultura cinese è uno degli otto trigrammi da cui derivano I Ching, a cui è attribuito il valore di immobilità, come fissità, seduta e meditazione. In tutte le culture la montagna rimanda a calma, ascesa spirituale e crescita, dimora degli dei, zona di confine, meta rinvigorente. Shān (montagna in cinese) si compone anche di due fotografie su carta cotone, montate su seta e bastoncini di bamboo, dalla forma verticale, che ricordano le opere di genere paesaggistico di antichi pittori cinesi. Un video completa il progetto, in cui il rapporto tra il paesaggio e l’architettura è più evidente. Qui una strana forma appare come una visione lungo il percorso della muraglia: energia e potenza naturale manifesta, spirito/divinità del luogo.
